Specialist Dermatologist comes to Oathall!

Does your pet suffer from recurrent skin irritation? Dermatology or skin disease can be really challenging to manage. It is upsetting for pets and frustrating for owners and veterinary surgeons alike. We have recently welcomed Charlie Walker, an independent dermatologist, to do clinics at our practice.

Charlie qualified as a dermatologist in 1999 when he was awarded the postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. In 2015, he was awarded the Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practitioner (Veterinary Dermatology). Charlie is the only independent, full-time veterinary dermatologist working solely within the South-East. He has complete clinical freedom from corporate practice prescribing constraints.

The initial consultations are up to ninety minutes long with follow-up consultations of thirty to forty-five minutes. Before these consultations, Charlie gathers and collates the historical information on the course of the skin problem to date. Some tests are performed during the consultation and other samples may be taken for further analysis at external laboratories. Charlie aims to establish a long-term treatment plan which is individually tailored to your pet.

Advice sheets detailing further treatment plans are provided and case discussions with the referring Veterinary Surgeon take place. A full summary report is also produced for the referring vet.

One of our RVN's Sophie recently spent 4 months in 2016 travelling around South America and Cape Town in South Africa. Whilst in Cape Town, Sophie volunteered for one month at Cheetah Outreach. Sophie also spend 1 year travelling in 2007, and 6 months travelling in 2011.

Cheetah Outreach is a small animal centre caring for Cheetahs, Bat Eared Foxes, Servals, Jackals, Meerkats, one Caracal and Anatolian Shepherd Dogs. These animals are at Cheetah Outreach as ambassador animals to raise awareness and funds to help preserve the Cheetah. This is done by placing Anatolian Guard Dogs onto farmer's land who then grow up with livestock and learn to protect it. Cheetahs are often mistaken as the predators that have attacked the farmer's livestock as they are seen out in the day, but it is generally always the night-time hunters. The farmers will sadly shoot the Cheetahs when they are seen in the day, but with an Anatolian in place, this will be enough to scare away the Cheetah as  they are non-confrontational.

The Cheetah is very sadly rapidly declining in numbers and is critically endangered with less than 5000 remaining in the wild. Cheetah Outreach is raising awareness of the farmer/cheetah conflict and doing all they can to help preserve this beautiful animal.

Whilst working at Cheetah Outreach, Sophie would care for the animals, give guided tours, work on the entrance and in the gift shop, and perform general duties.

This is what Sophie said about the experience: I love to travel, see the world and experience the nature the World has to offer. I have been fortunate to work with some amazing and beautiful animals and big cats. Working with Cheetahs and other cats was a fantastic experience and to hear a Cheetah purr is amazing - my favourite noise!

Laser Therapy – A must read!

Do you have a cat or dog that suffers from arthritis, sprains, hip dysplasia ,inflammations, wounds ,allergies, lick granulomas, otitis or IBD?  Then laser therapy can be the answer to drug free, pain free relief for your pet.

This is a relatively new idea to Veterinary Medicine but has been used on humans for much longer.  It provides deep tissue penetration that goes even further than massage and gives instant relief from pain by de-sensitising nerve endings that are over sensitised through pain and inflammation.

It is fantastic for acute and chronic pain and speeds healing time.

During our trial period for this machine at Oathall we were overwhelmed with the results that we simply could not stop our patients having access to this pain free, pain relieving therapy.  We are one of the first Veterinary Surgeries in this area to purchase one and we feel very lucky to be able to offer this service to our clients.

Your Pet will generally need a few sessions but the amount varies greatly depending on the condition.  Most Insurance companies cover the cost of the laser therapy so it’s something to bear in mind.  (we do advise you check with your insurer first).

The time scale between treatments depends on what you are treating with the laser therapy and shall be determined by the Nurse who has been trained in Laser Therapy.  For example, an arthritic dog may require 3 sessions over 4-5 days then 2 sessions the following week, reducing to one session a week then every other week then monthly.  Each session takes approximately 20 minutes.

Don’t Delay!! Book your Pet in today!  Call 01444 440224 for an appointment.
